FRIDAY NIGHT RACING
FRIDAY NIGHT RACING is low-key racing for sailors who have at least the Canadian Yachting Association’s “Basic Cruising” qualification or equivalent. Racing experience is not a prerequisite but you must understand the basic Colregs and be able to execute tacks and gybes under skippers’ orders.

UPDATES TO FRIDAY NIGHT RACING - JIB SET SAILING CLUB May 2009

Background

Friday Night Racing has been a tradition in English Bay for many years but recent clarifications of the regulations surrounding water activities and resulting advice to the club require a club policy of 'members first' for this activity and the nature of the RECREATIONAL MEMBERSHIP (see below) must be limited to avoid ongoing service to loosely attached members. The Recreational Membership is now limited to two sails per year, but can be upgraded at FULL VALUE should RECREATIONAL Members wish to become full or associate members and sail more. Extended use of the RECREATIONAL Membership to sail with the club on a casual basis can no longer be allowed.

FRIDAY NIGHT RACING access is prioritized as follows:

1) JIB SET Members
2) JIB SET ASSOCIATE Members
3) Cooper Daysail Club Members
4) JIB SET RECREATIONAL Members

All those accessing JIB SET vessels must be assigned to one of the four categories above - the club cannot permit any other access to the vessels. Those with on-line access to the boats should book through that venue. Those without website access should e-mail to make reservations. Ideal timing is between Tuesday and Thursday each week and spaces are allocated on a first come first serve basis within each priority group above.

Jib Set members and Associate members and Cooper Daysailing Club Members may participate in Friday Night Racing at no charge.

Guest Crew Passes and are not valid for Friday Night Racing and Children must be entered as Recreational Members - although traditionally very few children have participated in this event.

RECREATIONAL MEMBERSHIP

Recreational Membership is ideal for someone who would like to try out the club, or someone who lives out of town or who plans to sail two times or less per year.

A Recreational Membership is for Friday Night Racing (May to September) and Sunday Sailing (October to April) for which the membership fee is $15.00* for 3 years and the per-event cost is $50.00*. Recreational members are not required to make a deposit and can only crew on club vessels. Any fees paid to a Recreational Membership during the current calendar year may be rebated against an upgrade to a full Jib Set Membership or Associate Membership. A Recreational Member must upgrade before sailing a third time in a calendar year.

A Recreational Member should have CYA Basic Cruising or equivalent.

*Applicable taxes included We work to get everyone on the water quickly and ask you bring exact funds.

Please arrive at the JIB SET office at 1700. WE NEED TO BE OFF THE DOCK BY 1800. JIB SET Members can sign up in the on-line system to skipper and crew their boats. Recreational members pay $50.00 (cash please) at the office - see Susan Stuart.

RECREATIONAL MEMBERS ARE LIMITED TO TWO SAILS PER SEASON. AFTER THAT, FULL CREDIT FOR RECREATIONAL MEMBERSHIP FEES PAID IN THE CURRENT YEAR MAY BE CREDITED TOWARDS A REGULAR JIB SET MEMBERSHIP.
