NEW MARTIN M244 PERFORMANCE POCKET CRUISER UNVEILED

The future flag ship of the JIB SET Sailing Club - the Martin M244 - made its public debut on April 24th 2008 in the idyllic harbour setting of Victoria’s floating boat show. Appropriately, the much anticipated M244 was unveiled by its designer, Don Martin, aided by Colin Jackson, who inspired the project. Together, they revealed the product of their vision and creativity. Not present on the day, but equally recognized for taking the boat from drawing board to reality in an amazing four months, is legendary west coast entrepreneur and boat builder, Forbes Cooper.

Members of the Cooper Boating staff and the JIB SET Sailing Club were on hand to applaud this Canadian designed and built boat that is sure to become the mainstay of a one-design dynasty like its famed forebear - the 1981 vintage M242 24 footer - that to this day, has a large and loyal international following of enthusiasts. Advances in knowledge, materials and standards of performance dictated a fresh approach; the next generation M244 therefore incorporates the latest technology and its high performance characteristics and modern design cues, combined with stability and practical features make it an outstanding sail training platform and all-around performance cruiser.

Based on their experience from over two decades of sail training, cruising and racing, Don Martin and his design team incorporated many features that improve maintainability and operation of the M244 over earlier and even other contemporary designs. For example, the foresail furler is neatly located out of harm’s way under the foredeck and the spacious cockpit is free of traveller track and ropes. Bucket seats provide comfort and security for the crew when heeled and pushpit rails offer convenient perches in each quarter from which instructors may survey their students at work.

The most significant feature differentiating the M244 from its illustrious predecessor is its drop keel. However, unlike most trailerable yachts, the M244 gives up very little in terms of performance for this considerable convenience. Drawing on years of experience in the Americas Cup’s technical milieu, Mr. Martin has created an efficient dagger bulb keel design to balance an equally contemporary sail plan in combination with a full 24 foot waterline, fine entry, full buttocks and a broad beamed, chined hull aft.

In summary, while first and foremost a training and day sailing platform, this is also a boat designed to brilliantly perform when called upon. In addition, a cleverly integrated hull liner within the boat’s ample capacity amidships, provides comfortable weekender accommodation that includes large vee and quarter births and locations for cooking stove, cooler, gear stowage and the all-important porta potty. Sea trials are scheduled for mid to end of June.
