Volunteer Opportunities
It may not be the ideal time of year to come down and hit the water for a sail, but the Jib Set needs your help! There are still plenty of volunteer opportunities available, as we are currently winterizing our fleet for the season. Remember Jib Setters, any hours accrued are counted towards your volunteer deposit.

Please contact the Jib Set office for more information!

Jib Set Member Profile of the Month

This month we welcome Bastian Hane aboard as Chair of Communications. Always around the club, scrubbing Capris, sailing on Sundays and enjoying the Jib Set flotillas, and we are pleased to have him join the Jib Set Board. The Jib Sheet recently caught up with him and heard what he had to say.

Name:   Bastian Hane
Nickname:   "Sea Bear"
Age:   28

Occupation/what pays the bills?:
- Landscaper.

When did you start sailing:
- Jan. 2008 - before this date I didn't know anything about sailing! The opportunities to sail in Germany are limited and very expensive.

How long have you been a Jib Set Member?
- I was a Cooper Boating Day Sailing Club member then switched two months ago to the Jib Set.

Why did you join the Jib Set?
- I like the concept (everyone 's sailing club) and the club is affordable for me - I mean I'm still young and don't have the big money! But the main reason for me was the M244 because it is only available to Jib Set club members.

What do you enjoy most about the club?
- The Members (all of them are "all-weather" sailors like me and they go out in the summer too!) The location of the Club (takes me 3 mins to get there) and the 244 - everyone who was out with us on the weekend knows exactly what I mean ;) For the rest of you - go out with the 244 and you will know it as well!

Capri or Martin?
- If you asked me this question 5 weeks ago my answer would probably have been a Capri! (I love those boats - easy to sail and perfect for beginners) But today - after I was out with the 244 my answer is: Martin!

Describe your best sailing memory:

- Best?... hmmm.... going out with the boys and flying spinnakers in English Bay! It was a great time!

What are your sailing goals for the future
?:
- Sailing with the boys to Hawaii.... Coffee grinder and champagne sailing!

You can catch Bastian down on the Jib Set docks during the weekends of December, hosting the Martin 244 member orientations, or online racing the Volvo Ocean Race Game!

Virtual Sailing with The Volvo Ocean Race Game

Over the last few weeks, there has been a flotilla of Jib Setters with boats registered in the virtual Volvo Ocean Race. Based upon the actual race course, wind conditions and sail configurations, the virtual race is a great way to try your hand at around the world seamanship. With two of twelve legs complete, the 3rd leg from Cochin, India to Singapore, Malaysia starts December 13th! There's still plenty of time to register a boat! Check out the Jib Set blog for a member directory of boat names and listings, or you can join the VOR Jib Set group HERE.
