It's newsletter time once again.
There is some great events and festivities we have planned for the 2008/09 winter season.

We were fortunate with the weather in October. It was sunny and rain free nearly every weekend. Now November is a bit of a different story, but it is well known in Vancouver for it's wind storms, rain and waves. It may seem a bit dreary, but it's the perfect time for those who wish to improve their techniques as it's a great chance to practice heavy weather sailing skills like reefing, man overboard drills and heaving-to. If you need a quick refresher, don't hesitate to ask us in the office.

We look forward to seeing you out on the water,

The Jib Set Crew

The Charter Knot

There's something out there that all the dock staff, both at Cooper Boating and Jib Set Sailing Club refer to as a "Charter Knot". Each Charter Knot has a story to tell. Some speak of inexperience, some of laziness, others of a hurry to get a boat snugged up. The name Charter Knot is a name cheerfully adopted by the industry to describe any knot that defies explanation.  Other names such as "The round turn and 21 half hitches",  "the failed bowline" and "the sheet-blend" all fall under the classification of "Charter Knot".  We have all seen our fair share of charter knots down here, and feel it's a time to put an end to the confusion and difficulty of "the knot".

Could your knowledge of knots use some improvement?  From personal experience, I've found the best way to learn knots, is to combine them into our daily lives! Find an old piece of line, and put it next to your computer. While you chat on the phone, sip your coffee, or surf the net, practice tying your bowlines, round turn two half hitches, reef knots, figure eights and clove hitches. Be creative! There's nothing like tying a co-worker to their seat, mooring your chair to the desk or coiling all the cables cluttering your workspace. After enough practice it will be muscle memory and will be handy for use whenever you most need it out on the water.

Sail Away on a Sunday

Our Sunday Sailing Series is still in full swing so feel free to join us every weekend. We've had original events such as trips to Bowen Island and English Bay scavenger hunts. Something different from previous years. Come join the fun! Sign up is available on Karelo. Jib Set club members sail for free, so come join us, as we're always looking for qualified skippers. If you are planning on participating on a drop in basis, please notify us via email in advance so we can arrange adequate boats and skippers.

Simple Pleasures Flotilla Nov 15/16th
